Cuminum cyminum, is distilled from the seeds of an annual herb that grows up to about half a metre in height. The oil has a spicy, warming and very penetrating aroma, and will be familiar to many as the ground seeds are used extensively in Indian cookery. Understandably it is mainly known for its stimulating and tonic effect on the digestive system, where it can help relieve discomfort. It can be used in a massage blend and rubbed into the abdomen, but it can cause skin sensitisation, so use with care and dilute it well.
